How to convert hourly pay to salary

A year of full-time work at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, so:

yearly salary = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks

hourly rate = yearly salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks)

Monthly pay is the yearly figure divided by 12, not by four weeks, because most months are a little longer than four weeks.

Questions people ask

How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work in a week, then by the weeks you're paid in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that's 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year.

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the salary by the hours you work in a year. A $60,000 salary over 2,080 hours is $28.85 an hour.

Should I use 52 weeks or fewer?

Use 52 if your holidays are paid, as they usually are for salaried jobs. If you take unpaid time off, reduce the paid weeks: two unpaid weeks means 50.

What about a 37.5-hour week?

Change the hours per week. Many UK and Australian jobs are 37.5 or 38 hours, which gives 1,950 or 1,976 hours a year instead of 2,080.

Is this before or after tax?

Before tax. To see take-home pay, use the UK salary calculator or the Australian pay calculator, which both accept hourly rates.
