How your age is worked out

Age is counted the way people say it: whole years first, then whole months, then days.

  1. Years: how many birthdays have passed.
  2. Months: whole months since your last birthday.
  3. Days: the days left over after the last whole month.

The totals (months, weeks and days lived) count every day from your date of birth to the "age on" date, including leap days.

Age in other units

A year averages 365.25 days once leap years are counted, so someone who's 30 has lived roughly 10,957 days, or about 1,565 weeks. The table under the result shows the exact figures for your dates.

Leap-day birthdays

If you were born on 29 February, you only get your real birthday every four years. In other years this calculator counts 28 February as your birthday, which is how most software and many countries handle it.

Questions people ask

How is age calculated?

Count the whole years since your date of birth, then the whole months since your last birthday, then the days left over. Someone born on 15 June 1990 is 36 years, 3 months and 15 days old on 30 September 2026.

When does someone born on 29 February have a birthday?

This calculator treats 28 February as the birthday in years without a 29 February. Laws differ by country — some use 1 March — so check if it matters for something official.

Can I work out my age on a future or past date?

Yes. Change the "age on" date to any day: for example, to see how old you'll be at a wedding, or how old someone was on a historical date.

Why do different calculators give slightly different day counts?

Months have different lengths, so "months and days" depends on how the leftover days are counted. This calculator steps forward whole months from your birth date, then counts the remaining days on the calendar.
